Yes, you could reduce the wire size but you can do the same thing using 48 V DC instead of 12V and not have the danger of 120V AC.

So why do boats have large AC generator sets? – mostly to power equipment that is really intended for onshore applications. Why should you think twice before having AC on your boat? Unlike DC equipment AC equipment operates at potentially lethal voltages – 115 or 240 Volts. In a marine environment this is doubly hazardous.

Your car also uses DC and most small boats use only DC. However, as the boats get bigger they may use both AC and DC, until you get into the ship sized yachts that use only AC. First though, I will deal with DC because it is simpler to explain and what most small boats use. Direct current comes primarily from batteries.

Boats that do not have AC power and have DC electrics only can still enjoy the benefits of air Conditioning with a small DC air Conditioning unit. DC air conditioning can be powered by a conventional 12 or 24 VDC electrical system. The DC electrical system must have however, a large battery bank with the appropriate charging capabilities.
