Just from the limited range of fibreglass boats I am familiar with, 15 mm seem to be on the heavy side.. The thicknesses you are looking at are what Plywood would be, and Fibreglass is heavier as well as "stronger".
It's only 15/16" thick and yes, it's nothing but 100% hand laid glass. The sample came @ 16" off the keel and 24" off the transom on the starboard side. I would imagine that its gets thinner as you get closer to the chine but I have no idea how thin.
They were also quite a bit heavier than they actually needed to be. During those years we basically had 90-degree fiberglass roving and polyester resin to work with. Today, by using biaxial fiberglass cloth and more sophisticated vinylester and epoxy resins, strength-to-weight ratios can really be maximized.
How thick should a fiberglass boat hull be? They are commonly used with an M2008 transducer (500 kHz) to maximize the penetration of ultrasound in thick or attenuating fiberglass, providing a thickness measurement range of approximately from 0.150 in. to 3 in. (4 mm to 75 mm), depending on the type of fiberglass.
Standard uses for fiberglass are boats, aircraft, bathtubs, etc. For a boat to be considered a fiberglass boat, the hull, deck, liner, and even large parts of the console are made from fiberglass. Fiberglass boat construction in a mold first uses a gel coat; fiberglass cloth layers are applied, with resin applied on each layer.
Additionally, some builders fiberglass around the perimeter of the hull to deck joint. With the major parts of the boat assembled, interior fittings like seats and steering wheels can then be added. Finally, the details and finishing touches can be taken care of. Changes in how to build a boat
If the fiberglass skin is 1/8″-thick, the width of the bevel will be at least 1 ½” long. If the fiberglass is ¼” thick, the cut line will need to be at least 3″ in from the edge of the perimeter to allow for a 3″ bevel.
Apply resin to upper areas and work to lower areas. After all material is wetted, work out excess resin with a squeegee, being sure that there are no “resin bubbles” under the cloth. Keep the squeegee constantly in motion using tight-S strokes. Work from wet areas to dry areas, keeping resin ahead of the squeegee.
